I ran across a little stand of American Beech (I think?) by the side of the road on my walk the other day. Unlikely I would ever have noticed them in their summer clothes, but their coppery autumn leaves were set on fire by the low sun, and lured me in to tromp around in their neighborhood for a few minutes.

I subsequently learned that they are slow-growing and very long-lived, on the scale of hundreds of years. In years past, they were often seen as a sign of fertile soil, and were dug up to make room for farmland. Nowadays, these guys are far more likely to fall victim to a housing development.
