Regarding the tone in the room, this same observation struck me when I was an undergraduate, and has stuck. I lived in a dormitory that was co-ed in six of its eight "mods", and same-sex in the other two: one male, one female. While there was a share of young people drama in every mod, the co-ed mods were, by and large, more pleasant and less charged with drama than EITHER of the segregated sections. I lived in that building for four years with rotating populations, and it was ever so.
