Personally I tend to say prayers to myself, because they're mostly aspirational, and I myself have the most power to bring those aspirations into reality, not some superstitious figment of the imagination. That's even true when I use the name of a deity, because I recognise the deity represents an energetic principal which I myself will need to embody in order to bring about the desired result. It's a bit of psychological slight of hand. In that sense it very much blurs the line between religion, magic and mysticism, but I'm totally okay with that as long as it gets the job done. Not everything needs to slot into a perfectly well defined ontological or semiotic category in order to be useful.
