One cat we had almost certainly been abused and neglected before he somehow made it to our house. For a while he'd occasionally get into a state where he was pissed-off meowing *and* purring in response to being petted, but seemingly did not want to stop.
He eventually came fully around, but it took 7+ years to overcome less than 2 years abuse.
But I've seen similar emotional conflict exhibited by cats, especially in relationship to grooming.
