My take is that the Japanese effectively created the foundations of Taiwan as a modern nation making Japaneseness an integral part of Taiwan's fabric. Many decades of Chinese Nationalist rule was marked by the imposition of Chineseness on Taiwan. Indeed many of the Japanese buildings have only been restored in the past 20 years after they were neglected for decades under KMT rule. Hence much of Taiwan's nostalgia for Japan is as an alternative to Chineseness (2/2)
