Growing up in Sheikh Jarrah, where my home was taken by settlers, I was constantly performing for diplomats, journalists, and NGO representatives. I learned a script—not because anyone explicitly taught it to me, but by watching my grandmother, my father, my aunts, and others perform it. It was full of qualifiers, disclaimers, and reassurances, designed to make Palestinians palatable to Western audiences. This book was my attempt to shed that performance entirely."
