Norton's 'Here Abide Monsters' has a similar situation.
IIRC, a group of couples out hiking get lost in the woods, but it turns out they've actually crossed over into kind of a liminal or backstage universe where there is a war going on between saucer aliens and essentially high fae residing in fortress-cities. I think they were from competing futures, fighting over which path humanity would take. By existing in this place at all, the couples can't go back and must join a side.
