Early humanity was exposed to the elements, was subject to predation (including by other early humans), did not practice agriculture, did practice hunting and gathering, did not have money and had few possessions, traveled by walking, and otherwise lived just like a homeless person today.

Recent history (that is, since the birth of agriculture) is a half-molecule thin layer of civilization on top of a much longer, much more stable period. We could return to that norm at any moment.
