Sad story but instructive.
When I was in 6th grade (mind you, this was like 1980-81), a friend of mine snuck away during math class and programmed the school's new computers to go off during class with various alarms.
When the cacophony stuck, he had left something behind to give himself away. Principal wanted to throw him in detention, but based math teacher said he'd take care of it. Took him aside and gave him extra time, assignments, materials to sharpen his programming skills.
The guy is a very successful engineer today and credits that math teacher for understanding him and redirecting his talents.
Here's the thing: our society now has very few men like our math teacher.
One shudders to think how much white man genius is currently being wasted.
