I'll be filling in for a colleague who was to give a presentation this week to a group of overseas journalists visiting Seattle.

I'm sketching out a discussion about the hollowing out of local media in the U.S., ghost newspapers, zombie news sites, incentives for low-quality but attention-grabbing content and other factors that lead to less-informed and distracted local communities.

I'm tempted to point to my hometown, Grand Rapids, Michigan, as an example.
