Fuck. The. Netherlands. Fuck. Them. Seriously.
While this isn’t something we learned in school, this was easily discovered or read about online since. On top of that, this became more widely reported in the last two decades as Indonesia increased efforts for Dutch reparations while delicately navigating the 70+ years of friendly diplomatic relations.
I’ve had debates with people about Dutch responsibilities over this former colony here but nobody has or will ever sway my stance that the Netherlands must pay full reparations over their colonization and the atrocities committed during that time.
The actions that the VoC and the Netherlands government took in this archipelago were worse than what they themselves suffered from the Nazi
The refusal by The Netherlands and other countries and organizations to recognize 17 August 1945 as the Independence Day of Indonesia in favor of 27 December 1949 when the official transfer of power took place after the Round Table Conference at The Hague months prior, is the same as if the UK refuse to acknowledge July 4, 1776 as the American Independence Day because the revolutionary war was still happening until 1783, and will only recognize September 3, 1783 because that’s the date of the Treaty of Paris.
