Someone asked me over DM why I stopped being a Covidian and joined #TeamReality. This is the DM that I sent back:
First step was getting repeatedly harassed and mobbed by “debunkers” and their followers about topics I understood very clearly but kept being, inexplicably to me, misrepresented about. I came to realize that many people on my “team” were lunatics who were not promoting science at all but various ideologies and didn’t care how much you knew or what the evidence or arguments were if you disagreed with the “right” conclusions, even if that disagreement was very reasonable, accommodating, humble, not hyping or remotely radical, etc.
I was appalled because I had respected and trusted these people and had really believed we were right and the “misinformation spreaders” were wrong, evil, etc. I had supported deplatforming, etc. for Christ’s sake. I believed all the arguments about harmfulness of speech, etc. At the same time I had to admit that my own Zero Covid ideas were no longer compatible with reality. They were quixotic. I retweeted Musk’s Prosecute/Fauci tweet and was viciously attacked for it by a Twitter mob and called a grifter by two “evidence-based” guys with a NYTimes bestseller. Guys I had respected and whose words really disappointed and alienated me from that community for the dozenth+ time over the previous year.
It was then that I said screw all this and made my viral apology thread. I made it in bed in my underwear, quickly typed it into my phone. I went to sleep and it had blown up and was getting like 100 retweets every 10 minutes when I woke up. After that I realized that there was this huge community that somehow loved what I was saying because it validated the way they felt for years. Then I realized we felt the same way about “science-based” morons who were actually incompetent.
I was shocked and horrified to realize that I had been on a “side” that was completely wrong about Covid and that we ruthlessly suppressed other valid perspectives. Then I spent a lot of time reading about Covid and realized not only is #TeamReality a valid perspective, many things it says were more true but suppressed and censored and would have made superior policy if they hadn’t. This redpilled me even deeper since it actually means that the people doing harm were the establishment and its censors, not the critics. This was a complete reversal of my perspective. So yeah that is how I became a big #TeamReality and free speech person.https://nitter.net/kevinnbass/status/1652054411013750785#m
