I worked in adolescent mental health (inpatient psychiatric).
To be involuntarily locked up in one of those facilities meant that you had to pose a significant danger to yourself or others.
Most of the kids I worked with were only a danger to themselves - and by a pretty large margin.
I think if most people knew the percentage of those kids who identified as non binary / non-heterosexual, they'd be absolutely horrified.
So yes...nothing about that article surprises me at all.
I also want to add that they were (almost without exception) ALL GREAT KIDS...just confused and nihilistic as hell. (I can count on one finger the number of genuine sociopaths I encountered during my years there.)
It's heartbreaking. They're kids...confused and tyrying to figure shit out - just like we probably all were once. But our current culture sure as hell isn't helping matters...
