I'm always amazed at how quickly seeds germinate, even without a heat mat. I started arugula, bok choy, cherry tomatoes, basil, oregano, and several perennial flowers last Tuesday and they're all just about up now. Seems that keeping a lid over the trays works just as well as a heat mat for creating a warm growing environment.
