From National Museum of American History in DC some years ago. I love looking over old electric/mechanical devices to figure out how worked. This fan being a perfect example where the bottom is a big electro magnet while the blades are part of the electrical circuit for spinning themselves. You can see a contact on each blade, a couple of brushes (only one visible) supply voltage to turn part of the blade assembly into a magnet, spinning it away from the lower electro-magnet. Seems heavy and inefficient, but would love to see it run.
