Our Meg had an infection on her chin a couple of years ago. The vet told us to lift her food and water a few inches off the floor and to use saucer-like (not bowl-like) dishes as much as possible so she didn't keep scraping her chin in the rims. We were also told to use smooth ceramic or glass so less bacteria would build up where her chin might touch. It worked. :)

This also led us to discover that the other cats liked this arrangement, too. None of them like to put their face down into a bowl if they have alternatives.
