the very simple and obvious distinction is between a system that indexes information on external sites and refers users to it and one that internalizes that content (without consent of or compensation to the originating parties), synthesizes an abstraction from it (often poorly) and doesn't refer to the original external source. Any positive gains are trivial and the negatives are immense and varied. But this is far from an incremental change, it's a categorical shift.
