My own country (Portugal) development was put back a few decades with a 41 years christian corporatist regime: fat bureaucracy, poverty, old factories, old military resources, stagnant science... The only developments I can think of were railways and basic literacy (because propaganda). The crisis here was an anti-liberal (and anti-communist) coup that eventually got a finance minister to amass full power.
