In elementary school I learned most of the Midwest was covered by temperate forest (my textbook, like most in the 60s, ignored the fact that it was actually farmed by Native Americans, but I think it is true that it was also forested).
In high school I learned about the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and got concerned about the future of the planet.
When I taught high school I put those two things together and realized reforestation is a 1st, not just 3rd, world problem.
