I didn’t intend to get into a discussion of gatekeeping in the birding community, but since I’m here…. I’ve done this for about nine years and I’d say in my area that maybe 5-10% of the “old guard” of birding still gatekeeps. Meaning they insist that people from historically underrepresented groups “aren’t interested in nature” and use it as an excuse against outreach. The other 90% understand that young people, POC, and people of every gender expression are the future.
