These definitions leave out the third type, monopolies that use tactics to keep themselves on top.

It's clear then, a coercive monopoly is Thames Water, whilst steam is a market monopoly.

Yet, your definition implies that 'market monoplies' remain on top due to sheer quality. Yet that is almost never the case.

Steam, for example, have been doing many monoplistic things, especially Price Parity: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/06/valve-faces-a-656-million-lawsuit-in-the-uk-for-overcharging-14-million-pc-gamers/

Abusing their already large position. It's clear steam is top dog not due to offering the greatest service, that's clearly GOG (Has all the features of steam AND is DRM free). Steam lucked in, they were early.

Take windows for example too, they lots of money to stay on top, all the programs are on Windows, all OEM machines run windows. Other operating systems could never stand a chance at this point. Their monopoly is not state held, but it's practically un-dethronable.

Ultimately, I still believe you're right. There are TWO types of monopolies, state dictated I.E Thames water, and the types of Steam and Windows, who inevitably resort to mafioso tactics to stay on top, without exception.
