It's widely understood that the unifying thing about romance as a genre is that there has to be that happily ever after. (Or at least a happily enough for now.)
I couldn't do this for fantasy and that's been bothering me and tonight I realized that it's significance. The genre-unifying thing in fantasy is that these events have significance.
(In SF proper it's that the reader gets to feel smart. Space opera is much more opera than space, with the space part being furniture and set dressing.)
