honestly I think people expect too much from stuff like starfield
the thing about video games is they're *not* simulations. they're illusions with a light coating of simulation -- if it makes development easier -- and the amount of simulation is generally inversely related to the level of detail the illusion is trying to sell you
so if you're asking why can't you just fly into space, it's because the planet and space aren't actually connected in any meaningful way. you can't load adjacent zones by walking into them because they're only adjacent on the map, not in game space
or consider how little you can interact with the environment in doom 2016. it looks great, but most of the detail is just a texture pack, there's nothing "there" even in game space except a surface to paint the texture on
