There's the obvious learning that takes place that will make you a better programmer and more able to understand the decisions that other engines have made, but also as a tool for creative expression, and then further that your radically new idea that can't be done with an existing engine will very often come as a result of experiences you have while writing your own. Most people don't sit down and say "i want an engine that does X", rather they are working on an engine and when they get to a certain part they think "wouldn't it be fun and interesting if instead of doing this the normal way, instead i made it do X"
