So an idea that has been floating around fedi for years is the idea that large instances like mastodon dot social are not really serving fedi's best interests. They do to some extent obviously by getting people into fedi but beyond that not much.

The idea is that a 'big instance' would be set up that is radically community managed. That is defederations, expulsions etc would be voted on, democratically. Unilateral admin decisions would not be possible.
