Even though chainsaws are thought of as rough tools for big jobs, the first one was invented by two Scottish doctors for situations where childbirth via the usual means was very difficult or impossible. In the past, when a C-section was an exceptionally risky thing to do, it was used to cut through parts of the pelvis and allow the child to be birthed more easily. It was a great improvement over the hand saws and knives formerly used and resulted in less harm to the mother.
