His first cousin, Jerry (who I met once), was second chair oboeist of the New York Philharmonic for several decades. My dad wasn't particularly musical (nor my mom) and it seemed like the musical talent was in that one generation.
In the 80s, I started plunking at a piano, but I was mostly burning my artistic fires in theater. Did dozens of plays plus technical theater (both in high school and in outdoor local productions). Eventually could pick out a tune in treble clef, right hand.
