IMO a lot of it comes down to:
- USians are much more sympathetic to their overlords than other places for a variety of reasons, mostly propaganda
- there is a strong liberal-radical divide that makes large protests ineffective and keeps effective protests small
- our cops are heavily funded and militarized
- an arrest or charges can ruin your life (at least for a while)
- labor unions / movements have been in decline for decades (but maybe that trend is reversing!)
Basically we're the de facto imperial core and while that means extra privilege, it can also mean extra repression.
