The reason why we tarp our compost at all times is simple. When the piles receive a lot of rain they are protected from too much rain.
When it is not raining so much, the tarp protects the pile against unwanted intruders.
You have to turn the compost pile more often to introduce more air to the pile. But because it is turned so often, it generates less greenhouse gasses.
For now, we are receiving mostly a lot of rain and not a lot of strong winds.
