Far be it for me to defend Google (lol), but they do make a lot of the GApps for iOS, including Gmail (last I checked), Calendar, and Maps.
I think the only way to really be "free" is to stay far away from the ecosystems that bind, and use FOSS as much as possible.
My FOSS Android phone has a lot of compromises, but it's still useful for me for my day job so far. ;)
