Speech and communication issues were flagged as by far the biggest problem, with 90 per cent of teachers saying they witnessed language problems among struggling pupils. Jane Harris, the chief executive of Speech and Language UK, said some children were arriving to class “unable to respond to their own name”. The delayed development coincides with broader concerns that smartphones and tablets are increasingly being used as “digital dummies”.
Experts also raised fears that speech problems among young children have likely had a knock-on effect, sparking other issues, including unruly behaviour and dwindling attention spans. The report showed that 85 per cent of reception teachers reported “self-regulation challenges” among struggling pupils, which can include children being unable to manage their emotions.
A vast majority – 84 per cent – said children who started school this year were displaying poor attention spans and concentration difficulties, while just under three quarters said pupils showed development challenges such as lack of toilet training. “It seems to be a general trend in delayed potty training, but this cohort of children that have started school this year is the worst it’s been – ever,” she said.
“We’re getting calls from parents who are upset because their schools aren’t happy that their children aren’t toilet-trained, and calls from exasperated schools.”
