You have to periodically clear out unwanted old kernels to free space up. I think over the years, what was a fine default has degraded due to kernel size bloat - it's only recently started to be a problem on Debian (last few years). I've been running Debian on my own kit full time since about 2009 and never seldom had the problem until recently, and then only in exceptional circumstances. It used to happen a lot on Ubuntu and CrunchBang, even occasionally on RHEL and CentOS when I used to use them in a with setting.
