I am currently contemplating a bit how a society with a much smaller or no state at all would work in a particular situation my family is currently facing:
My dad is 83 years old, and now, after having a short time of very bad luck (falling down stairs resulting in a complicated leg fracture, having after that a wound infection AND catching pneumonia) he is now recovering in a care facility for the elderly. He is now after a couple of months in much better shape and it looks like he will regain nearly the full mobility he had beforehand.
Well... my family would normally not be able to afford this care. Even if my parents would spend the whole of their retirement income on the care for my dad there would still be a deficit of about 1000 € every month. This deficit is now taken care of by the German welfare system.
Now I am thinking how this would have played out without taxes and a state... on the one hand the welfare system would not exist in this form, so no coverage in this way. On the other hand: With less taxation there would be much more money available to save / invest / buy insurance to cover a case like this on an individual base - I think... Hmmm...
