Mastodon was much more “federated,” except that there never seemed to be a global network. You basically would go to a particular server and there would be no reach outside of that server. And you couldn’t take you account with you to multiple instances, or at least it wasn’t obvious enough that I intuitively knew how to do it.
Always just felt like I was just picking one of a series of disparate chat rooms to hang out in, rather than using a social protocol that established a more decentralized network.
