This requires maintaining stock lineages that reproduce from seed and have stable traits, then crossing them to produce the hybrid - and requires at least two lineages, and skilled laborers, quality control etc. With GMO, corporations have "patented" the seed, so they aggressively litigate instead. I figure Monsanto would be even happier if farmers wouldn't even obtain physical seeds from them - just grow the GMO crop from last year's seed, and pay rent for it. 2/2
