The only explanation is really the first mover advantage in terms of encrypted messaging apps, catchy name and “good” UI.

I have a feeling there’s another explanation related to culture that we can’t understand unless we live there. The other explanation could maybe also explain why tether is being used over Bitcoin in those same markets. 🤷‍♂️
