I think I know what to do.
The power supply is a bit flawed, but mostly in correctable ways. So what I think I should do is design a small 2-layer PCB that hooks into the regulator footprints on the board, and hosts the bulk of the power supply circuitry there. Seems simple and cheap enough to turn it around.
