He's doing consensus seeking to strangers on the internet instead of his other friends and family saying that he was out of line. He just wants to justify his decision and make excuses.
I can understand the sentiment of wanting the best friend to ASK first, but honestly a wedding amongst close friends and family seems to scream a potential splinter event for more weddings.
