That will increase costs due to loss of trade advantage. The point of a protectionist economy is to make sure your enemy can't pull the plug on your factories when you go to war, or arbitrarily fuck with your economy. It's less efficient but more under your own control, for better or worse. Only large and resource-rich countries could even consider it in modern times, and even then they need to be extremely strategic about fostering certain high-tech sectors effectively in their country. They can't just dump money into "chips" and have RTX5080's fall out of it.
