Making a small update in this thread, I got 2 small rpis with a hat that uses a NRC7292 wifiHalow chip to boadcast wifi on a 915mHz band for ~1km wifi, currently just using the alfa network AP => Client for simple routing but batman mesh networks are possible and even flashing openwrt with support for this chip "should" be possible for better dev UX as currently its all conf files.
