I've always had queer people in my life. I grew up with a closeted gay godfather who died of aids when I was 5. My parents didn't know he was gay until he was on his death bed. He was one of their best friends. They were blindsided and devastated. Shocked he couldn't be himself to his closest friends. In many ways, my parents decided it was the closet that killed him!
