Relays are where notes are stored on Nostr, and where clients retrieve them from. Big tech platforms like Facebook and TikTok effectively have just one relay that EVERYONE uses, and is owned by the company behind that platform, so they can easily boot anyone off of their entire platform by banning them from their single, centralized relay.
Nostr has hundreds of relays, some of which are open for anyone to store their notes on, and others that are closed or require payment. This means that, while you could be banned from a particular relay, you likely would never be banned from ALL relays. As long as you maintain a backup of your notes, you can just rebroadcast them to different relays.
In practice, this means most relays won't bother banning you, unless what you are posting is actually illegal and could come back to bite them for hosting it, since they know you can just post to a different relay.
