I was asked to explain today why I don’t like Bluesky, so I thought I’d share it here. I’m good like that.

It’s not new, it’s not safe, it’s Twitter. It’s owned and operated by the same people who bought you the bird site.

I joined Twitter in 2007. I had various accounts and one of the even won an award (Best Parody Account, FYI).

It was good when it started. But then, once they’d amassed a big user database, they stopped caring about the user. They said the did but they didn’t. The T&C’s said they did but it was all lies. And so many people have the proof.

They allowed racism, homophobia, transphobia and hate speech to go unchallenged. They only did something about it when news agencies started reporting on controversies from some accounts. One small voice explaining how wrong and harmful a post was wasn’t enough. A thousand small voices weren’t enough. But appear on the international news reports and suddenly “oh, we’ll do something about it!”

Bluesky has already had a massive racism issue which it had to deal with becasue no one - not of them who experienced it during the Twitter days - thought about it. Because they don’t care. They just want user numbers to justify their company to the funders. Funders who, in my opinion, are stupid for throwing money at a hate engine.

When they say “we’re making improvements to the interface” or anything other part of the service, it’s not for you, it’s to entice new people.

Twitter got too much for then. A monster they’d lost all control of. So, much like me playing SimCity, they abandoned it and started again. And by abandon it I mean sold it to a massive cock womble.

And thus Bluesky was born.
“Oh but this different!”

No, it’s really not. It’s 2007 Twitter and soon it’ll be 2014 Twitter. Thats the year I saw it go downhill. It might have been before but for me it was 2014.

There you have it. For me Bluesky is dangerous and has the potential to do as much harm as Twitter. And will do eventually. IMHO.
