I was recently reminded of my age when I learned that two members of my host family from when I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal died within just a few weeks of one another. They were not much older than me. At first, it was hard for me to identify why it was so emotionally upsetting to me. But, after a few days, I realized my mental image of them was as a young men since I had not seen them in forty years. I think the emotional impact was related both to my memory of them as young, and being confronted with the fact that I am also no longer young.
