It is absolutely racism. They may not know that’s where it came from, but spicy food was what the servants ate. While WASPs were eating boiled beef (ew), their Black, Latin, Middle Eastern and Asian servants were eating food with flavor.
I didn’t really know my father’s people, as they weren’t happy about my skin color, but the one time I spent a summer in the Hamptons was the blandest, whitest food I have ever in my life seen served on purpose. Like these are people that thought ketchup was too tangy. I would wait till people were asleep and go make chai tea, and the housekeeper stocked some naan and yogurt and figs for me so I didn’t die. 🤣
