I'd like to say horses for courses, but that's not how I write. Characters and their situation generates the story idea. As such, as a feminist, by default, I start with a female main character. As I add side characters, I default to female also, switching to male only if that's more practical for the storyline, I need a love interest, or I need to fill a typically female role. Same goes for antagonists, as generally I want to make a point that whatever we would expect a male to do, a female could do it as well or better. I like making the point that men can excel filling female roles, also, without embarrassment.
