(a) diagenesis forming a local concretion rather than an extensive strong rock matrix - if this was pyritised in shallow marine mud, bacterial breakdown of the soft parts and local sulphide diffusion to form the pebble?
(b) all a bit useless without also forming competent pyritised layers on the shell surface so that the pebble splits into the part/counterpart showing the ammonite? Otherwise it would just be a remnant imprint in the matrix.
