He could have just released a world shattering and (somewhat) healthy alternative to transportation, but instead sits on it due to HIS perfectionism.
It shows a lot of foreshadowing in the old labs section where Cave Johnson would quite literally dismiss his scientific team warning him about the dangers of continuing to ignore them.
But in his eyes he’s the only one that “should matter” he’s stubborn and narcissistic. Only really stooping low when he is the one who put himself in the position in the first place.
Cave Johnson’s lemon speech isn’t why he’s great, it’s the fact that he has used others to lift himself up and pushed others down, even his employees.
And the lemon speech shows Cave’s issues on blast.
He doesn’t care as long as he thinks it’s for the benefit of science.
As long as he thinks he’s in the spotlight.
I do think he genuinely cared for Caroline, But putting her inside of GlaDos was really the last straw that broke aperture.
