like, when i was a kid, the main value proposition of the internet was that the stuff on it was free. we didn’t usually have enough money to regularly do things like “buy a video game” or “go watch a movie” or even “rent a VHS tape from blockbuster”, so the internet was amazing value-for-money even back when they charged per-minute for dialup. you could download a bunch of shareware or whatever. given this context, to me at least, the concept of an online paywall has never made sense at all
