the sky is overcast
but a quiet light from the house
has tiptoed into the garden
just far enough

i can hear crickets singing
and see shadowy tree shapes
(or are they night creatures
going about their day?)

we listen and watch
and feel a sliver of relief from the night air
after another stifling day

and just for a moment, all is at peace
